Naturally TMI
Welcome to my new blog! What you see here is something I’ve always wanted to do as a form of self-expression. However, considering the private person that I am, I didn’t want this to have my name splashed all over it. As you may see from the title, I plan on getting into details about some issues we may find of apprehension in discussing.
Today, I’d like to start off talking about our old friend called the menstrual period. Some affectionately like to call it AF (Aunt Flo) or TOM (time of the month). I’ll refer to the period as ‘AF’ here. I hate when I hear people call it the ‘cycle’, as in I have my ‘cycle’. The cycle is the whole 28 day thing of which the ‘period’ starts a new one each month. Enough of my pet peeve…now lets talk protection:
In this post I’ll go into my experience with disposable pads and others protection options should follow afterwards. My first experience with pads was as a pre-pubescent girl with a bit of a discharge problem. I still have this issue at times. My mother was tired of me staining up my panties so she bought me some panty-liners. Unfortunately, nobody tells you that these things are made for the (no offense) skinny gals. I was always on the heavy side and these itty bitty things were totally squashed by the end of the day and did nothing to protect my undies. The adhesive didn’t work either. I told my mom about them and she bought me some generic thin pads or something. The store brands were the only kind that carried these particular pads. These were a little better, but still not sufficient. I stuck with them anyway for many years.
By the age of twelve, AF was here and I needed to explore other options in addition to the thins I usually used. I started using Always regular pads with wings and used them exclusively for several years. The wings and dri-weave always worked very well for me….until recently that is. I’ve heard that some people can develop an allergy to something even if it takes several years. This is exactly what I believe has happened to me. (I remember a friend of mine told me that Always made her itch and I immediately thought of that when I started to itch.) I noticed that I was having some weird itching that was not a yeast infection (I’m VERY familiar with the difference.) So, much to my dismay, I had to switch. I wasn’t happy about it because the others that I’ve tried just weren’t up to par. Always was ‘always’ in a class by itself.
I decided to see what Stayfree had to offer (I tried a Kotex sample and wasn’t impressed.) I was surprised that their comparable ultra thins were a bit similar, but without the dri-weave top layer I expect was the source of the irritation. I bought some and tried them and so far, they’re okay, but have yet to use them for a period. I plan on letting you know how they compare in a later post.
